Shapell Named Player of the Week

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College sports teams had an oustanding weekend and were rewarded with individual honors on Monday. Field hockey player Leah McClure (Rothesay, N.B.) and women's soccer goalkeeper Anna Shapell (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) were named NESCAC Players of the Week in their respective sports. The Polar Bears went 2-0 in field hockey, while the women's soccer team had a 3-0 week. Currently, three Bowdoin sports teams rank in the top 15 in national polls.

McClure, a senior forward on the field hockey squad, was the key to back-to-back Bowdoin victories over NESCAC rivals Amherst and Middlebury. The Polar Bears leading scorer notched both goals in a 2-0 win over the Lord Jeffs before scoring twice more, including the game-winner, in a 3-2 win over the Panthers. Currently, the Bowdoin field hockey squad ranks 15th in the nation in the latest national poll and stand at 6-1 overall.

Shapell, a sophomore netminder for Bowdoin, stopped all 13 shots she faced in back-to-back 3-0 NESCAC wins over Amherst and Middlebury. Shapell also played 45 minutes of scoreless soccer in a 3-2 win over Plymouth State on Wednesday and has not allowed a goal in over 358 minutes of play. The Polar Bears stand at 7-0-1 overall, ranking 13th in the latest national poll.

In other Bowdoin College news, the men's soccer team also picked up two wins over the weekend, beating Amherst and Middlebury to move to 4-1 on the season. The Polar Bears are ranked seventh in the country in the latest national poll.
