BRUNSWICK, Maine - The New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) has announced their Player of the Week selections for the week of September 16-23, and Bowdoin College had two student-athletes selected. Women's soccer player Kendall Cox (Guilford, Conn.) and field hockey goaltender, junior Gillian McDonald (Hudson, Que.) were both selected as Co-Players of the Week in their respective sports.
Kendall Cox scored only one goal this
week, but it ended 10 years of frustration as
her 30-yard
direct-kick gave Bowdoin a 1-0 win over
Williams. Not only did it give Bowdoin their first
victory
over rival Williams since 1992, but it moved
the Polar Bears (4-0-1) from number six to
number
three in the New England Regional rankings.
Bowdoin will return to action on Tuesday
afternoon
when they travel to play at Plymouth State. Cox
shared Player of the Week honors with
Middlebury's Leah Cumsky-Whitlock.
Gillian McDonald already ranks among the
best netminders in the history of Bowdoin field
hockey, and proved it again on Saturday,
stopping an incredible 25 shots- including
three in the
penalty stroke shoot-out- as Bowdoin took a
1-0 penalty-stroke win over Williams. The
victory
dropped McDonald's goals-against-average to
a microscopic 0.53 and gave her four shutouts
on
the season. Her career total of 19 shutouts
leaves her one shy of the school-record of 20,
set by
Dee Spagnuolo (1992-95). The Polar Bears
improve to 4-1 overall and will play host to
Amherst
on Saturday afternoon. McDonald shared
Player of the Week honors with Wendy Bonner
of
Colby.
