BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team picked up the inaugural NESCAC Women's Ice Hockey Championship on Saturday evening with a victory over Williams. The Polar Bears learned on Sunday evening that they will host a first-round NCAA game against NESCAC rival Middlebury on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
The Polar Bears (22-3-1) have already set a school record for wins this season and have lost only twice to Division III opponents. Both losses came at the hands of Middlebury (19-2-1) and were one-goal decisions, 3-2 on December 7 in Brunswick and 2-1 in overtime at Middlebury on February 16. Last season, Bowdoin was broke the Panthers Division III unbeaten streak of 102 games with a 3-3 tie in Brunswick. This year, Middlebury has lost twice to D-3 opponents, Manhattanville in the regular season and Williams in the NESCAC semifinals last Friday evening.
In other news, Bowdoin's Gillian McDonald (Hudson, Quebec) was named NESCAC Player of the Week for her performance in the NESCAC Championship last weekend. McDonald scored a hat trick in the first-period of the Polar Bear's 5-1 win over Colby in the semifinals. She later added the team's first goal in the Championship final win over Williams, 2-1.
