French Club heads to Portland for a night of laughs, in French - Wednesday, Sept. 11

Story posted September 05, 2013

On Wednesday, September 11, Bowdoin’s French Club, La Famille Fancophone, will head to Port City Music Hall to enjoy an evening with Gad Elmaleh, the francophone world’s premier stand-up comedian. He has been called the French Jerry Seinfeld. Here is a taste of Gad’s humor:

Elmaleh (born April 19, 1971) is a Moroccan and French stand-up comedian and actor. He was brought up in Morocco in a mixed cultural background. He studied political sciences in Montreal and then drama in Paris.

In his successive one-man-shows, characters such as Chouchou became popular and inspired films (Chouchou was released in theaters in 2003). His 2007 show, Papa est en haut (Dad is upstairs), was directed by his sister Judith Elmaleh and dealt with his childhood, his son and his father. It became so successful that it was prolonged until 2010. Gad Elmaleh sings, plays the guitar and the piano in most of his shows, including Papa est en haut (Dad is upstairs) in which he sings Fais dodo (Go to sleep), a traditional French lullaby.

As an actor, he has starred in several feature films, including Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin and comedies such as Coco and La Doublure. In 2010 he appeared in a dramatic role in Roselyne Bosch's La Rafle (The Round Up), which was based on the events surrounding the Vel' d'Hiv Roundup, a raid and mass arrest of Parisian Jews in occupied France during WWII.

Doors open at 7pm on Wednesday and the show begins at 8pm. Students may reserve their tickets ahead through the French Club. Please contact Jean-Paul Honegger to reserve your spot. If reserved in advance, the club will pay for both transportation and student rate ticket ($15). Tickets are also on sale at the regular rate ($40) at Port City Music Hall

As a preview to the show, the Famille Francophone will be showing a comedy starring Gad Elmaleh, La Doublure (the Valet), this Friday, September 6, at 8pm in Beam Classroom, ground floor of the VAC. The film is in French with English subtitles and is open to the entire campus community.
