Title page from Edmund Spenser's "Works" of 1617

Faerie Queen
The title page from Edmund Spenser's "Works" of 1617, the second edition of his complete poems and translations including the monumental Faerie Queene. This folio rivals the 1623 first folio of Shakespeare's plays and the numerous folio editions of Sir Philip Sidney's Arcadia as one of the great enduring monuments of secular Elizabethan print culture. As a book it surpasses the Shakespeare first folio because of its numerous beautiful engraved title pages and decorative devices. The second edition sometimes occurs in larger page format than the first (1611), and has a new title page. Both were printed by Matthew Lownes, who also apparently edited the volume, Spenser having died in 1599.
