Title page of Raphael Holinshed's "Chronicle" (1587), the principle source for Shakespeare's English history plays, although he also drew on it for "Macbeth," "King Lear," and "Cymbeline." The playwright probably relied on this, an enlarged second edition of the work which includes contributions by William Harrison (England), Boece (Scotland) and Stanyhurst and Campion (Ireland). Queen Elizabeth disapproved of some of the passages concerning Ireland, and they were censored.
