Penny Martin joined the Bowdoin faculty in 1988. A former high school English teacher, Professor Martin delights in helping Bowdoin students enter into a profession she has found ever interesting and richly rewarding.
The author of The Sound of Our Own Voices: Women's Study Clubs, 1860-1910, Professor Martin is expanding her research in women's informal education through her study of Folly Cove Designers, a group of self-taught craftswomen in Gloucester, MA, who between 1940-1970 won national acclaim for their block prints on fabric.
