Seep Geology

diagram

Oil Seeps are very common in certain regions of Alaska. They occur when oil-bearing formations are exposed due to faulting. There were extensive surveys done of mineral, coal and oil deposits in this region of Alaska beginning in the early 1900's. The locations of oil seeps are well-documented in the geological literature. We will begin our seep survey by viewing some Alaska Peninsula seeps and then work our way eastward past Prince William Sound toward Katalla and Yakataga.
