Practice midterm (posted 4 Oct. 2007)
This sample midterm will help you practice biological problem solving. To have it be as effective as possible in helping you practice for the midterm, you should study carefully before working on these questions and write out full answers (not just jot down notes).
Bear in mind that there is not necessarily only one "right" answer to a question nor will questions on exams necessarily look similar to questions on the problem sets. The problems are to help you practice using what you know about infectious diseases to explain novel scenarios.
Answer keys
Recommended use for optimal results:

Only consult keys after you have a) studied and b) written out full answers to the questions.

Do not memorize answers from keys; make sure you understand the concepts (i.e. that you can describe them to someone else in your own words). While similar ideas may appear on this year's midterm, the focus will be different. Quoting from previous keys will NOT be to your advantage.
Final practice questions example answers
Here are some example answers for the practice questions, so that you can see the types of answers that would receive full credit. Remember that you should study and write out complete answers to the study questions before consulting this key.
Memorizing the example answers will not help you on the final, since verbatim repetition of sample answers does not show me that you understand the material. Remember to read questions carefully; sometimes people *think* they know what the question is asking, since it seems at first glance similar to a practice question, but then don't end up answering the question that was asked.
