Student Summer Housing

This summer, the Office of Events and Summer Programs has set aside Smith House, Harpswell Apartments and Brunswick Apartments for summer housing.  Summer housing is available to Bowdoin students who are employed by the College or who have received a research fellowship.  Each student must be working a minimum of 20 hours per week on campus during the summer - this minimum may be met by working more than one job on campus.  Since staying on campus for the summer is a privilege, any student wishing to live in campus summer housing must also be in good social standing.  All students should make sure to read the terms of the lease, including the fine print, to ensure that they can meet all the requirements of summer housing.

The summer housing rental rate is $60 per week.  Student employees will be charged their summer rent through bi-weekly payroll deductions.  In most cases, students receiving fellowships receive a housing allowance paid by the Department that is offering the fellowship.  Summer housing is limited and will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Summer 2009 Housing Schedule:

  • Friday, May 1:  Signed Summer 2009 Apartment Lease Agreements due to Roberta Davis in the Office of Events and Summer Programs (first floor of Coles Tower).
  • Monday, June 1 (after 5:00 pm) - Saturday, August 15:  Summer housing available.
  • Saturday, August 15 (after 7:00 am) - Monday, August 17 (by 7:00 am):  Summer students move out of Summer 2009 assignments and into Fall 2009 assignments.  (Only applicable for students living in summer housing through Saturday, August 15).

Students needing accommodations between the closing of College housing for the Spring 2009 semester (Sunday, May 17 for non-graduating students and Saturday, May 23 for graduating students) and the opening of summer housing on Monday, June 1 must apply to the Office of Residential Life to make arrangements for interim housing, as students will not be permitted to remain in their spring assignments during the above specified period.

While living in campus housing, students are expected to comply with all of the rules and regulations contained in the Apartment Lease Agreement and are bound to observe Bowdoin's Social Code as a guide to residential life as they would during the academic year.  Summer Apartment Lease Agreements are also available at the Office of Events and Summer Programs, located on the first floor of Coles Tower.

The Apartment Lease Agreement needs to be accurately completed by the student and signed by the student's campus job or research fellowship supervisor.  In signing the Apartment Lease Agreement, the campus job or research fellowship supervisor is confirming that he or she is sponsoring the student's stay on campus for the summer and that the information provided on the Apartment Lease Agreement is correct.

On the Apartment Lease Agreement, students may indicate their first and second choices for housing locations - Smith House, Harpswell Apartments or Brunswick Apartments.  Students may also specify the names of Bowdoin students - employees and/or research fellowship recipients - with whom they would like to share a space for the summer.  When indicating location and roommate preferences, students should keep in mind that Brunswick Apartments have double and triple units.  During the summer, it will not be possible for students to rent single apartments from the College, but Smith House does have single rooms.  Our staff will do its best to accommodate students' preferences; however, since housing is limited, all requests cannot be guaranteed.  Further, if a student's Fall 2009 housing assignment matches with one of the locations used for summer housing, the student will be assigned to that location for the summer.

Completed Apartment Lease Agreements should be returned to Roberta Davis, Campus Scheduler, in the Office of Events and Summer Programs by Friday, May 1, 2009.  Anyone with questions about summer housing should contact Roberta Davis at x3421 or at rdavis@bowdoin.edu.
