Common Hour

"The common hour provides a space in the calendar for all members of the College to participate together in an event and, in doing so, will help knit us together more strongly as a community." - Craig McEwen, Dean for Academic Affairs

Common Hour events are held every Friday of the term at 12:30 p.m. Class and meeting schedules are altered so that students, faculty, and staff may attend. Open to students, faculty, and staff.

Inaugural Common Hour and Encore Lecture
Eddie Glaude, Assistant Professor of Religion and Africana Studies at Bowdoin College.

Proffessor Glaude gave the first of the new Encore Faculty Lectures. His presentation was titled "Bowdoin's Public and Its Problems."

Friday, September 10, 1999

Douglas Kennedy '76, New York Times best-selling author.

A journalist, playwright, and film producer, Kennedy is the founder of the Stage One Theater Company in Dublin and has served as administrator of the Peacock Theater of Dublin's famed Abbey Theater. His most recent novels include The Big Picture and The Job. His presentation is titled "The Rules of Engagement: a Few Thoughts about Writing Novels."

Encore Lecture
Peter Coviello, Assistant Professor of English at Bowdoin College.

Professor Coviello's focus is in American literature. His recent courses have ranged in subject from a comparative study between the Harlem Renaissance and the Beat movement to an examination of the American Renaissance of the 19th century.

Performance
Masque and Gown gives undergraduates at Bowdoin an opportunity to express their interests in the theater. Founded in 1903, the student-run group led to the formation of the Theater and Dance Department at Bowdoin.

Geoffrey Canada '74, nationally renowned advocate for children and expert on issues concerning violence, children, and community redevelopment.

Canada is President/CEO of Rheedlen Centers for Children and Families in New York CIty. He has frequently appeared on CBS This Morning, Good Morning America, The Today Show, Nightline, and has hosted a national PBS special titled Jobs: A Way Out? Canada is also the acclaimed author of Fist Stick Knife GUn: A Personal History of Violence in American and Reaching Up for Manhood.

Campus Crosstalk

Craig McEwen and Kent Chabotar debate whether or not faculty should increase their current course load and teach a total of five courses per year. Sponsored by the E9 student governance group and scheduled for at least one Common Hour a semester, the Campus Crosstalk series intends to generate public discussion on an issue that has primarily been debated within committees and governance groups at Bowdoin. McEwen, dean for academic affairs and professor of sociology, argued for an increase in the course load. Chabotar, vice president for finance and administration and treasurer and senior lecturer in government , argued for maintaining the current course load.

Renee Rosnes, one of the most imaginative and soulful pianists of modern jazz, will perform with her bassist Scott Colley, and drummer Billy Drummond. Rosnes released her sixth Blue Note album, Art and Soul, on August 31, 1999. On past recordings Rosnes has collaborated with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Dianne Reeves and Branford Marsalis among others.
