Professor Allen Wells, Karofsky Faculty Encore Lecture, presents “Cuba’s Favorite Pastimes:  Baseball and Politics”

Allen Wells came to Bowdoin in 1988 after teaching nine years in North Carolina. His scholarship has focused on modern Mexican history, especially Yucatán, and he offers a range of courses in colonial and modern Latin American history.   Each semester the Karofsky Faculty Encore Lecture features a Bowdoin faculty member chosen by members of the senior class honoring him or her as a teacher and role model. Kresge Auditorium, Visual Arts Center

Friday, September 21
John Bul Dau, Humanitarian/Survivor, presents “God Grew Tired of Us: The Story of the Lost Boys of Sudan.”

John Dau has experienced journeys in life that most people could never imagine. After civil war erupted in southern Sudan in the mid-1980s, 12-year-old John Dau, along with 27,000 others, fled for refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya. These "Lost Boys" trekked thousands of miles across arid desert, and more than half perished along the way. In 2001 relief came, at least for some, when the U.S. government invited 4,000 exiles, Dau among them, to immigrate to America, a journey captured in the film God Grew Tired of Us. Pickard Theater, Memorial Hall

The hour will seek to bring into the public Bowdoin forum the best of what happens in our academic departments, student groups, and the wider world: political commentary; discussion of scientific and technological issues; the work of writers, poets and journalists; philosophical ideas; the visual and performing arts; sports; business; and international affairs.
