Professor Paul Franco, Karofsky Faculty Encore Lecture
Mr. Franco is a Professor of Government with teaching responsibilities in the history of political philosophy and contemporary political theory. Mr. Franco is the author of The Political Philosophy of Michael Oakeshott, Hegel's Philosophy of Freedom, and most recently Michael Oakeshott: An Introduction.

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Environmental Activist and Author
Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is a noted environmental lawyer, activist, and co-host of Ring of Fire on the Air America Radio network. Mr. Kennedy is the Chief Prosecuting Attorney for Riverkeeper and serves as Senior Attorney for the Natural Resources Defense. Mr. Kennedy is well known for his success in leading the fight to restore the Hudson River. Among Mr. Kennedy's published books are the New York Times bestseller Crimes Against Nature, and The Riverkeepers.

Maxine Hong Kingston , Chinese American Author
Maxine Hong Kingston is a highly acclaimed writer of both fiction and nonfiction and was one of the first Asian Americans to make it to the top of the literary world in America. Kingston's work includes: The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghost, awarded the National Book Critics Award for Nonfiction, China Men, Hawaii One Summer, a collection of poetry, and Tripmaster Monkey: His Fake Book, her first novel.

Evan Wolfson , Gay Rights Activist and Executive Director of Freedom to Marry
Evan Wolfson is the Executive Director of Freedom to Marry, the gay and non-gay partnership working to win marriage equality nationwide. Mr. Wolfson worked for the Lambda Legal Defense & Education Fund in New York City, where he represented several gay marriage cases in front of the Supreme Court. In 2000, Wolfson was honored by the National Law Journal as one of "100 most influential attorneys in America."

Common Hour aims to provide an occasion for faculty, students, and staff to absent themselves from daily concerns, gather in common spaces, and engage in the ideas of speakers and the presentations of artists, and with each other in discussion of shared interests and concerns. The hour will seek to bring into the public Bowdoin forum the best of what happens in our academic departments, student groups, and the wider world: political commentary; discussion of scientific and technological issues; the work of writers, poets and journalists; philosophical ideas; the visual and performing arts; sports; business; and international affairs.
Common Hour will be held approximately every other Friday while classes are in session. Each semester Common Hour will include one Karofsky Faculty Encore Lecture featuring a Bowdoin faculty member chosen by the senior class, and one Common Hour where students from Bowdoin's Music Department will perform chamber music. Common Hour is open to all students, faculty and staff.
