Larry Brand focuses on the ecology of phytoplankton. His initial research was on the population genetics of phytoplankton. Another area of research interest has been physiological ecology, focussing on algal adaptations to light, nutritional trace metals, and toxic trace metals. More recent research has focussed on Harmful Algal Blooms in Florida-red tide dinoflagellates along the west coast, and cyanobacteria blooms in Florida Bay and various lakes.
