Maine is a great place to study processes related to Earth and ocean systems. Bowdoin's geographical location near the mountains and the coast means classes can readily study the Gulf of Maine, estuarine systems, sandy and rocky beaches, watersheds draining three major river systems on the East Coast, ancient volcanoes, metamorphic rocks, rock and gem quarries, the Norumbega fault system, fossils, glacial sediments and landforms, bedrock aquifers, inland waters and nearby bays.
