Affordable Housing in Brunswick

There are two remaining public information sessions on affordable housing opportunities at McKeen Street Landing (former Navy housing) in Brunswick, just minutes from the campus.

Both sessions will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room of the McLellan Building and will include information on availability and financing options. Sessions last approximately 30 minutes.

Traffic Alert from the Town of Brunswick

College Street and Park Row (upper) To Remain Closed Until Approximately June 26th:

The reconstruction of College Street continues and the section of College Street between Park Row and Maine St and Park Row from Maine Street (opposite Potter St) to South Street will remain closed through early next week. These two sections of road will remain closed while work continues on College Street from Maine Street to and including the Park Row intersection. This section of road was base paved today and HCC will be installing the granite curbing and adjusting utilities as well as continuing the waterline replacement east on College Street throughout this week. Sidewalks in this area will also remain closed. The curb on Park Row behind the Joshua Chamberlain Statue will also be reset this week to narrow the entrance to better direct vehicles now that the street traffic flow has been reversed and traffic exits at this end and may only turn right. There will be a few hour water service interruption on Wednesday morning (6/19) as the waterline work proceeds. FMI on the water service impact please contact the BTWD at 729-9956.

College Street will not accommodate thru traffic until the project has been completed in late September.

"I'd never run before because of a heart condition, but completed the Couch to 5k program last summer. By the end I was healthier, sleeping better and generally feeling fantastic. It's well-designed for old, unfit non-athletes like me because you run at your own pace and don't ever have to worry about speed: you start gently and improve gradually. New Constellation Award presented at the Polar Awards this year!

Rainy weather drove this yeara€s All Campus Picnic indoors, but the stars were shining brightly for all to see a€" the Polar Stars, that is. The 2013 Polar Star Awards were presented to members of the staff who were nominated and selected based on demonstrated excellence in five categories. A new Polar Constellation Award was also presented this year.

One department, Facilities Management, had set a goal of increased customer service and satisfaction. One Facilities shop did an outstanding job, as evidenced by several individual nominations for customer service awards a€" including one suggesting that the entire shop should get the award. Because all of those stars aligned, the College gave a special award this year a€" a a€œConstellation Awarda€ a€" to all the Polar Stars in the Electrical Shop in recognition of all they do. Constellation Congratulations to Mark Pelletier, Jamie Magno, Joe Triggiani, Gary Flood, Scott Gustafson, and Cleve Knowles!

The recipient of the Polar Star Leadership Award goes to Judy Montgomery. Described by more than one nominator as having a a€œtake chargea€ attitude, and as someone who has a€œaccomplished the work of two people with amazing energy, skill and grace,a€ Montgomery has served as acting librarian for nearly a year now.

One would hope a person wouldna€t stay with the College more than 30 years unless they were committed to the place. In the case of Mike Chipman, it also helps to have whata€s been described as a great attitude and a willingness to a€œalways give 110 percent.a€ Chipman, who works in the Facilitiesa€ Mechanical Services Shop, received the Polar Star Award for Commitment.

The Polar Star Award for Teamwork goes to Cheryl Harris in Campus Security. Harris works across departments and offices, graciously assisting students, faculty, staff a€" and those applying to be students, faculty and staff. She is described as a a€œconsummate professional, whose work ethic and interpersonal demeanor set the highest standard for exemplary performance.a€

It is not easy to be an innovator. It requires out-of-the-box thinking and a drive to make things better than they are. Jim Diemer from Facilities Management, the winner of the Polar Star Innovation Award, has done that. Many of Diemera€s suggestions have been implemented, making the Collegea€s infrastructure more reliable and cost efficient. He has also worked outside what one might assume was his comfort zone as a maintenance coordinator to totally streamline the contract process. On top of all that, hea€s said to be a€œunfailingly good-natured, honest, kind, generous a€¦ and wicked funny.a€

The 2013 Polar Star Award for Customer Service goes to Sue Lindsey from Development. Lindsey comes in contact with a wide range of people across campus a€" students, every academic department, the presidenta€s and deana€s offices, trustees, alumni, dining, you name it. She is said to be attentive to the needs of all these constituents, and does so in what is said to be a a€œcheerful, tireless and flexiblea€ way.
