MUSIC: Auditions & Re-Enrollment on Wed.
Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013
4:00pm to 9:00 pm
Studzinski Recital Hall
Hello BCO and chamber players new and returning! We will have re-auditions for orchestra and chamber ensembles on Wednesday, Jan. 23rd in Studzinski Recital Hall: Winds and Brass 4-6pm and Strings and Piano 6:30-9pm. As these are more for reconnecting with me and the other coaches, you will be signing up for 5-minute slots - please see sign up sheet in Gibson Hall - just enough time to hear 1 excerpt, hand out music and guidelines, and talk about important ensemble dates throughout the semester. Seating and chamber group assignments along with a coaching schedule will be completed by Friday the 25th. If you have any special requests for repertoire or group members you'd like to play with, please let us know at the audition. The first Orchestra rehearsal will be Sunday, Jan. 27th from 7-8:30pm in Studz. I will hand out the schedule for rehearsals and concerts at the auditions.
The repertoire for Orchestra this semester is very exciting! We will be starting with Glinka's rousing Overture to Russlan and Ludmilla, a Russian opera which includes magic, a kidnapping and rescue followed by Faure's sensuous and ultimately tragic Pelleas and Melisande suite, another work about star-crossed lovers except this time they're not so lucky, a sort of King Arthur meets Quentin Tarantino. We'll finish off the program with 'Furiant" from Dvorak's Czech Suite which is a perfect closer to the program. Since the Faure is so easy for cellos they will also be playing Villa-Lobos Suite for 8 cellos based on his famous Bachianas Brasilieras no. 5 with soprano vocalise. The whole program will be about 45 minutes.
PUT THESE DATES IN YOUR CALENDAR ASAP and BRING YOUR PLANNER WITH YOU! The concert date for BCO is Saturday April 20th at 3pm in Studz. The dress rehearsal for BCO will be the Thursday evening before the Saturday concert, April 18th (time TBA) The Chamber Ensemble Fest performances are at 4:00 pm and 7:30 pm on Thursday, May 9. See you all next week and I'm looking forward to getting started.
