Diana Hess is senior vice president at the Spencer Foundation, a foundation dedicated to investigating ways in which education can be improved around the world. She is also professor of social studies education at the University of Wisconsin—Madison. Hess is the author of “Controversy in the Classroom: The Democratic Power of Discussion” and the forthcoming “The Political Classroom: Ethics and Evidence in Democratic Education.
