New Director of Religious and Spiritual Life, Robert Ives (Allen Delong)

Dear Colleagues,

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Robert (Bob) Ives ’69 to serve in the newly created position of Director of Religious and Spiritual Life at the College. Most notably, Bob is the founder of The Carpenter’s Boat Shop in Pemaquid, Maine. He designed “The Boat Shop” as a place for those in transition and the more than 3,000 people who apprenticed there had one thing in common according to Bob: “a need to heal and find new direction,” which they did through hand-building small wooden skiffs, sailing dinghies and Shaker furniture in a community dedicated to the Benedictine principles of work, prayer, study, service, worship, recreation and service.

For his work at The Boat Shop, Bob received the Bowdoin College Common Good Award and the Deerfield Academy Heritage Award. He holds a Master of Divinity from the University of Edinburgh and has served as Minister at the Monhegan Island Community Church, the Sheepscot Village Community Church and the New Harbor and Round Pond United Methodist Churches. He has been a lobsterman and a teacher in a one-room school house and is one of five generations of Ives family Bowdoin graduates. We are lucky to welcome him back to Bowdoin College in this role.

Bob will work closely with the religious and faith-based student-organizations, with individuals of any faith or spiritual tradition, and those who wish to reflect on their spiritual life in a safe environment. Bob will have an office in 30 College, the multi-faith/multi-cultural house, and a satellite office in the Smith Union, just across from the Mail Center. As an introduction to the Bowdoin community, he will deliver the invocation at the Martin Luther King Jr., commemoration on Monday, January 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel. He can be reached at rives@bowdoin.edu.
