Rebekah Metzler
Cultural Study of Acadia National Park
Advisor: Pamela Ballinger
Hailed as both a location of beauty and fascination, the aura of Acadia National Park (ANP) carries a sense of uniqueness that has passed to the residents and visitors of the area. However, this park has not always existed and therefore opinions of the area must have changed as a result of its creation and development. In terms of a landscape analysis, there is a precedent of work pertaining to either landscape or tourism, or both. Ms. Metzler will conduct a study of the park as it relates to the cultural and visual perceptions of the landscape for both the year-round residents and the summer tourists of the region. She will take into account the fisherman's perspective, residential pereptions, and long-term tourist and short-term tourist views in finding out how ANP affects the peoples' lives in both overt and covert ways.
