Kurt Martin

Sources of Stream Water Flow in the Coastal Studies Center Watershed Study
Advisor: John Lichter and Peter Lea

In the spring of 2001, five forest ecology plots located on the east side of the CSC property were established. Since then, much data have been collected from these plots including a detailed map of each plot. Four of the five ecology plots are located within a watershed. After finding suitable points for sampling, Mr. Martin will survey these points using an electronic "Total Station," a surveying instrument that uses laser technology to accurately chart the topography of an area. This information will enable Mr. Martin to conduct geostatistical analyses of both the forest ecology plots and the watershed to examine spatial patterns in the biological and geological databases and a potential relationship between the two as well. Additionally, he will develop a time series of measurements of dissolved organic carbon concentrations in the soil, groundwater, and stream water enabling him to model the relative contributions of surface water and groundwater flow into the watershed. This project will provide a better understanging of water and chemical flux at the CSC.
