Coastal Studies Seminar Series

General Information

The goals of the Coastal Studies Seminar Series are to integrate the CSC into the academic life of the college and to collect together a series of intellectual activities that make people aware of the coastal connections in their own work or discipline. It is intended that speakers be hosted by a wide range of departments including, but not limited to: Arctic Studies, Art, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Education, English, Environmental Studies, History, Geology, Government, Mathematics, Physics, Sociology and Anthropology. Because of the inherent breadth of "Coastal Studies", such inter- and multi-disciplinary approaches are particularly suitable. This seminar series will help to introduce students and faculty to coastal topics.

Speakers who are cosponsored by CSC will be listed on the CSC web page (and other media) under the heading Coastal Studies Seminar Series. This will allow students and faculty who have multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary interests in Coastal Studies to locate seminars of interest easily. The CSC will undertake to advertise broadly the list of speakers in the series. Listing of the seminar in Coastal Studies Seminar Series will be in addition to any listings by the hosting department in their own series.

The CSC aims to cosponsor six such seminars in spring semester 2000. The CSC will usually provide a 1:1 match of departmental funds, contributing up to $400 per seminar speaker towards the cost of hosting a speaker, including travel, housing and associated social events.

Guidelines

Departments may cosponsor more than one speaker per semester in the Coastal Studies Seminar Series, but preference will be given to departments that would be hosting for the first time. The CSC will attempt to schedule seminars so that there is not more than one such seminar in any given week.

Applications should include:

  • the nominator’s name and email address or phone number,
  • the speaker’s name, home institution, home department,
  • cosponsoring (Bowdoin) department,
  • putative title,
  • list of available seminar dates,
  • preferred seminar date
  • brief, one-paragraph description of the speaker’s work and its relevance to Coastal Studies.

Once cosponsorship has been approved and a suitable date set, it is expected that the nominator and the cosponsoring department will contact the speaker and make all necessary arrangements for their visit. The hosting department will be expected to arrange for payment of costs and the CSC will reimburse the department for the relevant matching amounts. After an application has been approved, financial arrangements should be made through Rosemary Armstrong ; 113 Adams Hall; 725-3396.
