Ascophyllum nodosum (Knotted Wrack):This rope-like brown algae dominates the mid-intertidal in protected locations such as the Coastal Studies Center. Inidividual fronds, which can be quite old, put down one new air bladder each year. Spores recruit poorly in the absence of an algal canopy, probably due to their very poor ability to adhere to the substratum.
