Metridium senile (Frilled Anemone)

Metridium senile  (Frilled Anemone): This is an anemone that feeds on small zooplankton with fine frilly tentacles armed with nematocysts (stinging cells). They recruit frequently into the tanks at the CSC. They prefer to feed in moderate to slow (~15 cm per sec) currents, and so are found in relatively protected subtidal and low intertidal habitats. They orient upright in very slow flows and tilt their tentacles downstream as current speeds increase to catch food from their turbulent wake. Differences in feeding behavior of large and small anemones has been the subject of one Bowdoin senior honors theses (Thompson, 1992).
