Ciona Intestinalis (sea vase)

Ciona Intestinalis (sea vase): This solitary tunicate is a common member of fouling communities and is found in great abundance in the seawater tables at CSC. As with all tunicates, it is a filter feeder that brings unfiltered seawater into its large incurrent siphon, filters out phytoplankton on its branchial basket and ejects the excurrent out the relatively small excurrent siphon. The yellow border to the siphons and the clear tunic are characteristic of this species.
