Summer Grants

Selection Criteria

  • Merit of the project and contribution to the community
  • Potential for personal development or enrichment of the student
  • Demonstrated good use of past opportunities
  • Promise of future success in chosen profession or business
  • Broad interests, exhibited by many extracurricular activities
  • Applicants must be members of the sophomore class and in good academic standing and be returning to campus in the fall of their junior year.

Students shall be selected based on the quality, clarity, and feasibility of their proposed projects. Applicants must demonstrate enthusiasm for their projects, as well as the capability to carry out their stated aims effectively. Each recipient should also be someone the selection committee believes would benefit personally from the summer experience.

This does not mean the project must fit into the applicant's career goals; rather, the experience should enhance the overall character of the applicant, and in turn, Bowdoin College. In addition, the McKinley Grants should go to students (to quote Henry Russell Shaw) "who without necessarily having attained the highest scholarship in college, have made good use of their opportunities and give promise of success in professional or business careers."

Preference will be given to proposals that are innovative and creative and that demonstrate leadership or initiative on the part of the applicant.
