EMBRY-RIDDLE - AERONAUTICAL UNIVERSITY
Presidential Fellowship
An excellent opportunity for a recent graduate or graduating senior interested in a career in the aviation/aerospace industry.  The Presidential Fellow gains valuable experience working full time assisting the President and Vice President in the management and administration of the university.  Advanced concepts of management, information technology, leadership are areas of learning and responsibility.  The fellowship contract typically runs for two years.  The Fellow receives an annual stipend of $18,600 and a full tuition waiver - plus books and supplies -for the pursuit of a graduate degree program at Embry-Riddle.
ELIGIBILITY: Acceptance into a graduate program at Embry-Riddle, located at Daytona Beach, FL.  Previous aviation or business experience is preferred, but is not required.  Deadline: March 15.

THE CHARLES A. AND ANNE MORROW LINDBERGH FOUNDATION
Lindbergh Grants
Provides funding to graduate students whose research interests are compatible with NASA's programs in space science and aerospace technology; intended for students who would use a center research facility; many fellowships available.
ELIGIBILITY: Must be a college senior, BA/BS recipient or master's or doctoral candidate; must be sponsored by department chairperson. Deadline: February 1.

NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION NASA
Underrepresented Minority Focus
Designed to increase African, Hispanic, and Native American participation in graduate study and research in space science and aerospace technology careers.
ELIGIBILITY: Must be a U.S. citizen; must be a member of an ethnic minority group; must be enrolled in a graduate program in a discipline relevant to NASA's interests; must be willing to spend a year of residency at a NASA center. Deadline: early February.

NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION
Earth System Science Fellowship Program
Targets students pursuing graduate degrees in fields supporting the study of Earth as a system, research in climate systems, ecological systems and dynamics among others.
ELIGIBILITY: U.S. citizens and resident aliens will be given preference, but there are no citizenship restrictions. Students must be admitted and enrolled in a full-time graduate program at accredited U.S. universities. Deadline: mid-March.

ZONTA INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION
Amelia Earhart Fellowship Awards Offers awards to women for graduate study in aerospace-related science and aerospace-related engineering programs.

Harold Bettinger Memorial Scholarship
Offers a scholarship to an undergraduate or graduate student majoring in horticulture with a business and/or marketing emphasis (or reverse).

Carl F. Dietz Memorial Scholarship
Offers a scholarship to an undergraduate student majoring in horticulture with specific interest in bedding plants.

James K. Rathmell, Jr. Memorial Scholarship for Work/Study Abroad
Offer is extended to serious, upper-level undergraduate or graduate students with plans to work/study outside the country in the field of floriculture or horticulture. Established in 1977, the grants are offered for research and educational projects which will contribute significantly to a technology/nature balance. Selected Professions Group Fellowships
Offers funding to women from ethnic minority groups that have been historically underrepresented in designated fields (business administration, law, medicine).

BPWF Scholarship Programs

Minority MBA Fellowships
Provides fellowship support to talented African, Hispanic, and Native Americans enrolled in MBA programs at member universities of the consortium (Indiana U., U. of Michigan, New York U., U. of North Carolina Chapel Hill, U. of Rochester, U. of So. California, U. of Texas, U. of Vermont, Washington U.-St. Louis, and U. of Wisconsin).
ELIGIBILITY: Must meet above stated criteria; must attend or plan to attend a consortium-affiliated university in an MBA program. Deadline: February 1.

THE KARLA SCHERER FOUNDATION
Scholarships for Women
The Karla Scherer Foundation was established in 1989 to provide scholarships for women wishing to pursue a career in the corporate business world. Particular emphasis is placed on applicants focusing on economics and finance in the manufacturing-based sector. Scholarships are not confined to any particular academic institution or geographic location nor are the scholarships restricted solely to academic achievers or to those in financial need.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants may be any age, but must be candidates for an undergraduate or graduate degree at a qualifying college or university and must maintain an acceptable scholarship level. Deadline: Flexible, but applications are generally requested before the end of the fall semester.

Communications and Journalism

CHARLES BABBAGE INSTITUTE
The Adelle and Erwin Tomash Fellowship in the History of Information Processing
The fellowship is offered to a graduate student whose dissertation will address a topic in the history of computers and information processing. The fellowship may be held at the recipient's home academic institution, at the Babbage Institute, or any other location where there are appropriate research facilities. Priority is given to students who have completed all requirements for the doctoral degree except the research and writing of the dissertation.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants should send biographical data and a research plan including a statement and justification for the research project, discussion of methods, research materials, and evidence of faculty support for the project. In addition, the applicant will need three letters of reference and certified transcripts of graduate school credits. Deadline: mid-January.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BROADCASTERS
Grants for Research in Broadcasting
Provides funds to defray out-of-pocket expenses incurred in the execution of broadcast research. There are also scholarships for general study in broadcasting or radio.
ELIGIBILITY: No restriction placed on academic level of applicant. In some cases, study must take place in a university or college which is an institutional member of the Broadcast Education Association. Deadline: January 31.

NATIONAL FEDERATION OF PRESS WOMEN, INC.
Malloch Scholarship
Offered to a female junior or senior or graduate student in communications.
NFPW Junior/Senior Scholarship
Offered to a female junior or senior student. Recipients are chosen on the basis of academic performance, career potential and financial need.

SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY
Newhouse School of Public Communications
Offers a master's level combination fellowship and internship program in newspaper journalism for members of under-represented groups. Includes free tuition for sixteen months and a monthly stipend.
ELIGIBILITY: Be a U.S. citizen and a member of an under-represented group. Open to students who have a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0, but have not majored in journalism on the undergraduate level. Must have taken the GRE by mid-January. Deadline: February 15, but application materials should be requested in the fall.

NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUE OFFICE OF CANCER COMMUNICATIONS
Graduate Internships in Health Communications 
The National Cancer Institute offers paid 6-month graduate-level internships with the possible option of a 6-month renewal.  Qualified graduate students received firsthand experience in health communications.  Interns are assigned to the following areas in the NCI's Office of Cancer Communications: Science Writing, Health Promotion and Social Marketing, Cancer Information
Service, Patient Education, and Website Management.
ELIGIBILITY: The internships are open to U.S. citizens currently enrolled in a graduate school program, who wish to pursue an internship prior to completing the requirements for a Master's degree.  Applicants should have some background in the biomedical or physical sciences, combined with communications, health education, journalism, technical writing or website
management.  Students are not required to obtain academic credit in order to be eligible.  Deadlines: October 1 for the January through June term; April 1 for the July through December term.

WCVB-TV BOSTON - Two Fellowships
1) Leo L. Beranek Fellowship for Newsreporting
WCVB-TV Boston, an ABC affiliate, will conduct an on-the-job training propgram in broadcast journalism for those who are minorities or disadvantaged by economic social conditions and encouncter substantial difficulty in gaining access to broadcast careers as a result.  The goal of the program is the development of writing, editing, producing, and reporting skills.  One person will be selected each year for a salaried, nine-month fellowships which begins in September.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must have at least a BA degree and proven interest in broadcast journalism demonstrated through past internships and extracurricular activities associated with the communications and journalism field.  A transcript and three letters of recommendation are required as well as a statement outlining future career objectives and detailing why the applicant would deserve the fellowship. Deadline: April 30.

2) The Hearst Broadcast News Fellowship
Hearst-Argyle Television, Inc., conducts on-the-job training program in broadcast journalism for those who are minorities or disadvantaged and who encounter significant difficulty in gaining access to broadcast careers as a result.  The Hearst Fellowship draws on applicants from college and universities in each of the six Hearst Television Communities - Boston, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Baltimore, Kansas City, and Dayton.  The nine-month fellowship begins in September and is based in Boston at WCVB-TV.
The goal of the program is to expose the fellow to all areas of news gathering and news production.  The emphasis is the development of writing skills and on the fundamentals of newscast producing.  Upon completion of the program the fellow will gain a thorough understanding of all aspcts of broadcast news to qualify for an entry level position as a news writer or news producer in a salaried, nine-month fellowship.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must have at least a B.A. degree and proven interest in broadcast journalism demonstrated through past internships and extracurricular activities associated with the communications and journalism field.  A transcript and three letters of recommendation are required as well as a statement detailing why the applicant chose to pursue broadcast journalism and why they deserve the fellowship.
Deadline: April 30.
 
UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS PRESS
James A. Michener Publishing Fellowship
The University of Texas Press is offering a publishing fellowship for graduates with a degree in the humanities.  The fellowship is for one full year, beginning on September 1, and ending August 31.  The fellowship training at the Press will be intensive in one department (Editorial on Design/Publishing) with exposure to and instruction in the operations of other departments.  For James A. Michener Publishing Fellowship the Fellow will work exclusively on humanities projects.  The objective of the program is to help prepare Fellows for careers in book and journal publishing.  Heavy emphasis will be given to scholarly publishing, although much of the training will apply equally well to commercial publishing.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants should have a strong desire to pursue a career in publishing.  They will be asked to sign a statement of understanding and intent-- an understanding of the program's purpose and procedures and the intent to complete the Fellowship year and to pursue a career in publishing.  Finalists will be given editorial tests, and for those interested in Design/Production, a design portfolio will be required. DEADLINE. March 15.

Education

THE BENJAMIN/CUMMINGS PUBLISHING COMPANY
Campbell Biology Prize
Scholarship prizes are awarded to outstanding undergraduate students who intend to teach biology at the high school level.
ELIGIBILITY: Current undergraduates. Applicants must write an essay characterizing the one teacher who most inspired them to teach biology. (Please see file folder for additional details.) Deadline: February 28.

FINANCE AUTHORITY OF MAINE
Paul Douglas Teacher Scholarship Program
When funds are available, this federally funded program will provide "scholarship loans" for four years of undergraduate education. The scholarships must be repaid within ten years after graduation by teaching full time for not less than two years for each year of scholarship received. Special programs can reduce the repayment clauses. The intent of the program is to attract highly qualified individuals into the teaching profession.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be legal residents of the State of Maine for other than school purposes at the time of application. Deadline: early May.

Engineering

ASSOCIATED WESTERN UNIVERSITIES, INC. (AWU)
Graduate Research Fellowships
AWU awards graduate fellowships to qualified master's and doctoral degree candidates in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology. The awards are made available through funding from the Department of Energy, (DOE) and its laboratories, industry, and other federal agencies. These fellowships provide the opportunity to conduct thesis or dissertation research. Fellowships range from one to twelve months.
ELIGIBILITY: Open to master's and doctoral candidates enrolled in an accredited graduate program. Institutional affiliation and citizenship restrictions may apply for some awards or facilities. Applicants will be reviewed on the basis of academic performance, research potential, career goals, recommendations, and compatibility of scientific interests and proposed research with the resources of the host facility. Deadline: Applications may be submitted at any time. Complete applications received by February 1st will be given full consideration for summer fellowships.
Undergraduate Student Fellowships
The fellowships are offered to undergraduates to enhance the educational experience of qualified science, mathematics, engineering, and technology students. Funding sources are the same as for the Graduate Fellowships. The fellowships provide an intensive introduction to science and technology through participation in research under the guidance of experienced scientists and engineers at one of the cooperating facilities. The fellowship term is eight to sixteen weeks.
ELIGIBILITY: Must be a current undergraduate at an accredited college. Applicants will be reviewed on the basis of academic performance, class standing, career goals, recommendations, and compatibility of scientific interests and abilities with the needs and resources of the host facility. THE FORD FOUNDATION
Pre-Doctoral and Dissertation Fellowships for Minorities
Awards made to African, Hispanic, and Native Americans, Native Alaskans, and Native Pacific Islanders for study in research-based doctoral programs in the behavioral and social sciences, humanities, engineering, mathematics, physical sciences, and biological sciences, or for interdisciplinary programs comprised of two or more eligible disciplines.
ELIGIBILITY: Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; must be a member of an ethnic minority group. Deadlines: November 4 for predoctoral and dissertation fellowships; January 10 for postdoctoral fellowships.

NATIONAL CONSORTIUM FOR GRADUATE DEGREES FOR MINORITIES IN ENGINEERING, INC.
Graduate Minority GEM Fellowships
Offers graduate fellowships in engineering and the natural sciences to African, Hispanic, and Native Americans.
ELIGIBILITY: Must be a U.S. citizen; must be an undergraduate junior, a graduating senior, or a BA/BS holder. Deadline: December 1.

NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL
Graduate Fellowships
Three-year graduate fellowship in science and engineering for study and research leading to a master's or doctoral degree in the mathematical, physical, biological, engineering, and behavioral and social sciences, including history and philosophy of science and to research-based Ph.D.s in science education. Program is co-sponsored by the National Science Foundation.
ELIGIBILITY: Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent alien of the U.S. Deadline: November.
Minority Graduate Fellowships Program
Provides financial assistance to members of ethnic minority groups who are or will be progressing toward advanced degrees in science or engineering (see above); co-sponsored by the National Science Foundation.

OAK RIDGE ASSOCIATED UNIVERSITIES ORAU
Fellowships/Scholarships/Travel Grants/Internships
Provides assistance to students in biological and physical sciences, mathematics, magnetic fusion, physical, nuclear, and mechanical engineering, and health physics.
ELIGIBILITY: Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; must be a master's or doctoral candidate in stated fields attending an accredited U.S. institution. Deadline: Varies according to type of funds applied for; see Career Planning Center file for specifics.

UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE
Graduate Fellowship Program
Designed to increase the number of U.S. citizens educated in disciplines of science and engineering by awarding three types of fellowships to recent outstanding undergraduates: National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowships; The Navy's Office of Naval Research Graduate Fellowship Program; and the Air Force Laboratory Graduate Fellowship Program. (Ten percent of the fellowships will be awarded to members of ethnic minority groups).
ELIGIBILITY: Must be a U.S. citizen; must hold BA/BS and be entering a relevant graduate program. Deadline: mid-January.

RONALD E. MCNAIR POST BACCALAUREATE ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM
This federally funded program provides grants to selected institutions for the purpose of preparing eligible undergraduates to pursue a doctoral degree. Program is open to first-generation, low-income college students, minorities, women, or students who are otherwise underrepresented at the doctoral level in chemical, civil or surveying engineering and physics.
ELIGIBILITY: Must have completed the junior year by the beginning of the research period; G.P.A. of 3.2; be a U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. citizen. Deadline: early May.

Environment/Resource Management

AMERICAN FISHING TACKLE MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION
Andrew J. Boehm Fellowship Granted to graduate students in marine conservation and scientific management, especially if proposed research will potentially benefit recreational fisheries.
ELIGIBILITY: Must be an M.S. or Ph.D. candidate. Deadline: mid-March.

AMERICAN WATER WORKS ASSOCIATION
Abel Wolman Award and Larsen Aquatic Research Support
Designed to encourage promising students to pursue advanced training and research in the field of water supply and treatment. Offers financial assistance to M.S. or Ph.D. candidates pursuing a career in the field of science or engineering that could benefit aquatic research.
ELIGIBILITY: Must be a citizen of the U.S., Canada, or Mexico and be enrolled in an appropriate graduate program. Deadline for M.S. candidates: mid-November; deadline for Ph.D. candidates: Early January.

FRIENDS OF THE EARTH
Environmental Policy, Journalism, Community/Campus Outreach
This environmental advocacy organization is offering several fellowships with an emphasis on environmental protection; preserving biological, cultural, and enthnic diversity; and empowering citizens to have an effective voice in decisions affecting their environment and their lives. FOE projects include: ECO-TEAM, GLOBAL ACTION TEAM, PLANET PROTECTION TEAM as well as JOURNALISM, COMMUNICATION AND MARKETING TEAM. Fellows work in research, lobbying, and assisting with administrative support. A six-months commitment is required. A small monthly stipend is offered.
ELIGIBILITY: Graduates or graduating seniors with an interest in the above issues as well as demonstrated commitment to environmental action are urged to apply. Excellent speaking and writing skills are required. Deadline: There are two deadlines: winter/spring fellowships begin in mid-January; summer/fall fellowships begin in mid-July. Applications need to be submitted as early as possible (at least six weeks before the starting date).

COEJL: THE COALITION ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND JEWISH LIFE
Year-Long Legislative Fellowship
The COEJL Legislative Assistant serves alongside six other legislative fellows at the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism in Washington, DC.  Responsibilities include:

  • monitoring federal environmental legislation
  • representing COEJL on Capitol Hill
  • providing legislative information to Jewish leaders across the country

SIGURD OLSON ENVIRONMENTAL INSTITUTE
Sigurd T. Olson Research Award Program
Provides research funds for those interested in researching common loons in the western upper Great Lakes region of the U.S. and Canada.

20/20 VISION EDUCATION FUND
Kate Sherman Peace and Environmental Fellowship
The goal of the fellowship is to give fellows an educational, challenging, and productive experience in public policy work on a wide range of peace and environmental issues, and to encourage participants to consider a profession in public policy work.  The duration of the fellowship is one year, begining in May 1998.
ELIGIBILITY: B.A. degree.  Excellent oral, writing, editing, and computer skills.  Some knowledge of the congressional process and national security and/or environmental issues.  Strong commitment to the goals of 20/20 Vision.

Global Change Education Program
1) Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE)
The SURE ten-week summer undergraduate program (conducted  June through August) includes: a two week orientation and research training session at a university; an eight-week research experience with a mentor at the Dept. of Energy (DOE) facility; a scientific writing workshop, and a final symposium and poster session at a DOE national laboratory.
ELIGIBILITY: applicant must have completed the sophomore year by June of the first year of application; a GPA of 3.0 or higher; plan a career in global change sciences; be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.  Applications are available in October. Deadline: February 1.

2) Significant Opportunities in Atmospheric Research and Science (SOARS)
The SOARS undergraduate program is conducted June through August.  It is focused on increasing the number of traditionally underrepresented groups in atmospheric and related sciences.  The program was established by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) in partnership with the National Science Foundation.  SOARS is co-sponsored by UCAR, DOE, the National Aeronautics & Space Administration, and the Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration.

Selected Professions Group Fellowships
Offers funding to women from ethnic minority groups that have been historically underrepresented in designated fields (business administration, law, and medicine).

AMERICAN BAR FOUNDATION
Summer Research Fellowships in Law and Social Science for Minority Undergraduate Students
The American Bar Foundation sponsors a program of summer research fellowships to interest minority undergraduate students in pursuing graduate studies in the social sciences. The summer program is designed to introduce students to the rewards and demands of a research-oriented career in the field of law and social science.
ELIGIBILITY: U.S. citzens and lawful permanent residents including, but not limited to, persons who are African American, Mexican, Native American, or Puerto Rican. Must have completed the sophomore or junior year; G.P.A. of at least 3.0, a major in the social sciences or humanities. AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION
Louise Giles Minority Scholarship
Scholarships are offered to students of academic excellence and leadership who have a commitment to a career in librarianship.
ELIGIBILITY: Must be a U.S. or Canadian citizen. Applicants must enter or be enrolled in an ALA accredited master's degree program, but cannot have completed more than 12 semester hours towards a master's degree in library science prior to early June. Deadline: Early January.

THE AMERICAN POLITICAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATION (APSA)
Graduate Fellowships for Minority Students
The major purpose of the Fellowship Program is threefold:
1. To identify and aid prospective minority political science graduate students.
2. To encourage other institutions to provide financial assistance to these prospective students.
3. To contribute to the development of political science by recruiting persons who will bring greater diversity to the field.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must intend to pursue the requirements for a doctoral degree in a graduate department of political science (specialized programs for the M.A. or M.P.A. degree are excluded). Minority Fellowship Program in Psychology
Offers fellowships to ethnic minority students interested in obtaining a doctorate in psychology or neuroscience; provides training in neurosciences, clinical skills, and research.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL USA
Ralph J. Bunche Human Rights Fellowship
The fellowship is named in honor of the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize winner Ralph J. Bunche and his service in pursuit of freedom for all the world's people. The program invites young people of color to join in working against human rights violations worldwide and to abolish the death penalty in the U.S. and abroad.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicant should be a member of a traditionally recognized minority group; be a recent college or graduate school graduate. Experience in human rights work through local and national organizations is desirable. Strong academic record and good communication and organization skills are essential. Deadline: March.

ARENA STAGE
Allen Lee Hughes Fellows Program
Arena Stage's fellowship program offers an exciting opportunity for people of color who are in the early stages of their theater careers.  The program offers personalized training in Arts in Education, Business Management/Personnel, Casting/Production, Communications/PR, Costume Design, Development/Fundraising, Directing, Literary Management/Dramaturgy and many other aspects of theater management.  Fellowships are full-time positions that require a seasonal commitment of 40-44 weeks (August through June).  Starting dates will be determined by departmental and production considerations.  Arena Stage will
provide a stipend of up to $10,000 per Fellow.  Housing and transportation are the responsibility of the Fellow.
ELIGIBILITY: Candidates should possess an undergraduate degree, art-related experience, and a serious interest in theater.  DEADLINE: Usually set for early April.

ASIAN CULTURAL COUNCIL
Asian Cultural Council Fellowships
Supports cultural exchange in the visual and performing arts between the United States and the countries of Asia, and has been affiliated with the Rockefeller Brothers Fund since 1991. Fellowships to individuals constitute the central feature of the ACC's grant program, the emphasis being awards to artists, scholars, and specialists from Asia for research, study, and creative work in the United States. Some grants are also made to Americans pursuing similar activities in Asia and to educational and cultural institutions engaged in projects of special significance to Asian-American exchange. In addition, the Council awards a small number of grants in support of regional cultural exchange within East and Southeast Asia.

THE FORD FOUNDATION
Pre-Doctoral, Dissertation, and Postdoctoral Fellowships for Minorities Awards made to African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, Native Alaskans, and Native Pacific Islanders for study in research-based doctoral programs in the behavioral and social sciences, humanities, engineering, mathematics, physical sciences, and biological sciences, or for interdisciplinary programs comprised of two or more eligible disciplines.

Illinois Minority Graduate Incentive Program
Provides financial assistance to African American, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Americans who wish to pursue graduate or professional degrees at Illinois institutions and who intend to seek faculty or staff positions at Illinois colleges or universities upon completion of their studies.
ELIGIBILITY: Must be a member of an ethnic minority group; must attend an Illinois institution and plan to work at one after graduation. Deadline: mid-February.

MUNSON INSTITUTE - MYSTIC SEARPORT MUSEUM
Paul Cuffe Memorial Fellowship Fellowships are offered to encourage research that considers the participation of Native Americans and African Americans in the maritime activities of southeastern New England. Research is to be carried out at the Mystic Seaport Museum as well as neighboring institutions.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must submit a full description of the proposed project, a preliminary bibliography, brief project budget, full resume, and references in order to be considered for the fellowship. Deadline: mid-June

NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION

The National Physical Science Consortium offers a unique six (6) year doctoral fellowship program in astronomy, chemistry, computer science, geology, material science, mathematical sciences, physics, and subdisciplines at a university which is part of the consortium.

Also, must be a U.S. citizen accepted for study at one of the member universities of the Consortium, must have research experience at a university and in industry, high academic standing and GRE scores. PUBLIC POLICY AND INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS (PPIA)
Fellowship Program
The Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Fellowship Program seeks to recruit and empower a new generation of culturally diverse and dedicated public servants. PPIA targets that segment of the U.S. population that will constitute the majority of new workers hired in the new millennium -- people of color. By offering the analytical, quantitative, linguistic, and communications skills needed for the 21st Century, PPIA helps its fellows to launch their careers in public service. Graduate Fellowships support Master's degrees in public policy and international affairs in 29 U.S. graduate schools. The PPIA Fellowship Program provides $15,000 in funding over the two-year study period. The participating schools contribute a minimum of $15,000 or its equivalent in grants, tuition waivers, and assistantships.

THE PAUL & DAISY SOROS FELLOWSHIP FOR NEW AMERICANS
Graduate Fellowships
This fellowship opportunity is for graduate students who are holders of Green Cards, naturalized citizens, or children of two naturalized citizen parents.  The program will support up to thirty students for up to two years of graduate school in any subject, throughout the United States.  Students already in graduate study are eligible, though not past their second year.

RONALD E. MCNAIR POST BACCALAUREATE ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM
This federally funded program provides grants to selected institutions for the purpose of preparing eligible undergraduates to pursue a doctoral degree. Program is open to first-generation, low-income college students, minorities, women, or students who are otherwise underrepresented at the doctoral level in chemical, civil or surveying engineering and physics.
ELIGIBILITY: Must have completed the junior year by the beginning of the research period; G.P.A. of 3.2; be a U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. citizen. Deadline: early May.

SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY
Newhouse School of Public Communications
Offers a master's level combination fellowship and internship program in newspaper journalism for members of under-represented groups. Includes free tuition for sixteen months and a monthly stipend.
ELIGIBILITY: Be a U.S. citizen and a member of an underrepresented group. Open to students who have a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0. but have not majored in journalism on the undergraduate level. Must have taken the GRE prior to mid January. Deadline: February 15, but application materials should be requested in the fall.

UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE
Graduate Fellowship Program
Designed to increase the number of U.S. citizens educated in disciplines of science and engineering by awarding three types of fellowships to recent outstanding undergraduates: National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowships; The Navy's Office of Naval Research Graduate Fellowship Program; and the Air Force Laboratory Graduate Fellowship Program. (Ten percent of the fellowships will be awarded to members of ethnic minority groups).

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY Significant Opportunities in Atmospheric Research and Science (SOARS)

WCVB-TV BOSTON - Two Fellowships
1) Leo L. Beranek Fellowship for Newsreporting
WCVB-TV Boston, an ABC affiliate, will conduct an on-the-job training propgram in broadcast journalism for those who are minorities or disadvantaged by economic social conditions and encouncter substantial difficulty in gaining access to broadcast careers as a result.  The goal of the program is the development of writing, editing, producing, and reporting skills.  One person will be selected each year for a salaried, nine-month fellowships which begins in September.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must have at least a BA degree and proven interest in broadcast journalism demonstrated through past internships and extracurricular activities associated with the communications and journalism field.  A transcript and three letters of recommendation are required as well as a statement outlining future career objectives and detailing why the applicant would deserve the fellowship. Deadline: April 30.

The Hearst Broadcast News Fellowship
Hearst-Argyle Television, Inc., conducts on-the-job training program in broadcast journalism for those who are minorities or disadvantaged and who encounter significant difficulty in gaining access to broadcast careers as a result.  The Hearst Fellowship draws on applicants from college and universities in each of the six Hearst Television Communities - Boston, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Baltimore, Kansas City, and Dayton.  The nine-month fellowship begins in September and is based in Boston at WCVB-TV.
The goal of the program is to expose the fellow to all areas of news gathering and news production.  The emphasis is the development of writing skills and on the fundamentals of newscast producing.  Upon completion of the program the fellow will gain a thorough understanding of all aspcts of broadcast news to qualify for an entry level position as a news writer or news producer in a salaried, nine-month fellowship.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must have at least a B.A. degree and proven interest in broadcast journalism demonstrated through past internships and extracurricular activities associated with the communications and journalism field.  A transcript and three letters of recommendation are required as well as a statement detailing why the applicant chose to pursue broadcast journalism and why they deserve the fellowship.

NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP TRUST FUND OF THE GRAPHIC ARTS
NSFT Scholarships
The purpose of the Trust Fund is to provide scholarships to qualified and interested students who want to prepare for careers in the graphic arts industry. Approximately 150 nationally competitive scholarships are available.

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS The Kate Neal Kinley Memorial Fellowship The fellowship is open to graduates of the College and Fine Arts of UI Urbana-Champaign and graduates of similar institutions of equal educational standing whose principal or major studies have been in the fields of Architecture, Art, or Music. The fellowship will be based on the applicant's unusual promise in the Fine Arts. The fellowship is to be used toward defraying the expenses of advanced study of the Fine Arts in the US or abroad.

ACADEMY FOR EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
National Security Education Program - Graduate International Fellowships
The National Security Education Program, created by Congress in 1991, addresses the need to increase the ability of Americans to communicate and compete globally by knowing the languages and cultures of other countries and to
deepen the awareness of the connection between national security and the issues of sustainable development, environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth, migration, and economic competitiveness. Awards are made for a minimum of one academic semester and a maximum of 24 months.  The basic grant for domestic language or area study is $2000 per semester.  Overseas study is based on program expense.  The maximum award is $10,000 per semester for overseas study for up to two semesters ($20,000).
ELIGIBILITY: Must be a U.S. citizen and enrolled in or applying to a graduate degree program in an accredited U.S. college or university.  All fellowships must include formal study of a modern language other than English and the study of an area and culture.  NSEP fellowship recipients agree to work either with a U.S. government agency with national security responsibilities or in higher education (in that order of priority).  The length of the service obligation is equivalent to the duration of support from NSEP.  Deadline: mid-January

CORO FELLOWS PROGRAM IN PUBLIC AFFAIRS
Through this nine month, full-time, post-graduate leadership training program in public affairs, fellows are provided a unique opportunity to develop an understanding of public policy and decision-making by working closely with individuals and institution that influence life in the public, private, and non-profit sectors. THE HERBERT SCOVILLE JR. PEACE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
Fellowship
This is a fellowship to students interested in arms control and security issues. The Peace Fellowship allows its recipients to work with an arms control organization in Washington, DC.  Assignments may be in one of the following organizations: ACCESS: an International Affairs Information Service; Arms Control Association; British American Security Information Council; Center for Defense Information; Center for Nonproliferation Studies; Council for a Livable World Education Fund; Federation of American Scientists; Institute for Energy and Environmental Research and
others.  The fellowship is for a duration of four to six months, with a stipend of $1500 per month and health insurance, plus travel expenses to Washington, DC.   Dr. Herbert  Scoville, Jr., for whom is program is named, wanted young people to have the opportunity to be involved in arms control and peace issues.
ELIGIBILITY: Excellent academic accomplishments and a strong interest in peace and security issues; demonstrated experience with public-interest issues.

Fellowship Program
The Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Fellowship Program seeks to recruit and empower a new generation of culturally diverse and dedicated public servants. PPIA targets that segment of the U.S. population that will constitute the majority of new workers hired in the new millennium -- people of color. By offering the analytical, quantitative, linguistic, and communications skills needed for the 21st Century, PPIA helps its fellows to launch their careers in public service. Graduate Fellowships support Master's degrees in public policy and international affairs in 29 U.S. graduate schools. The PPIA Fellowship Program provides $15,000 in funding over the two-year study period. The participating schools contribute a minimum of $15,000 or its equivalent in grants, tuition waivers, and assistantships.

RUTGERS, THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW JERSEY
Eagleton Institute of Politics Fellowships Program - Harold Martin Fellowship
A one-year fellowship is offered by the Eagleton Institute in cooperation with the Dept. of Public Policy at Rutger's Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy.  The program, which leads to a Master of Science degree in public policy, is designed to prepare students for careers in government, politics, and public affairs.  The Harold Matin Fellowships provide over $15,000 in financial aid, including a $6000 stipend.  The Eagleton Alumni Fellowship includes tuition remission and a $5000 stipend.

The Jesse Marvin Unruh Assembly Fellowship Program
The fellowship offers an opportunity for individuals of all ages, ethnic backgrounds and experience to directly participate in the legislative process. The Program provides a full-time legislative experience along with a graduate seminar conducted by California State University at Sacramento.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must have completed a B.A. degree by October of the fellowship year. There are no preferred majors. Individuals with advanced degrees or those in mid-career are encouraged to apply. Deadline: early March.

CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY/SACRAMENTO
The Judicial Administration Fellowship Program
The fellowship, sponsored by the Judicial Council and the Center for California Studies, is being offered to students with a B.A. and B.S. degree in diverse majors. The program has been developed in response to the need to educate and train professionals and leaders in the growing complexities of the court system. Fellows are enrolled as graduate students in the CSUS Master of Public Administration Program. The program qualifies students for loan deferment during the fellowship year.
ELIGIBILITY: B.A. or B.S. degree by summer; post-graduates and mid-career applicants are also welcome. Congressional Research Grants

The Urban Fellows Program
Offers an outstanding opportunity for college graduates considering a career in public service. This is a nine-month fellowship which combines work in Mayoral offices and City agencies with an intensive seminar component exploring key issues facing New York City government. The fellowship covers one full academic year from September through May. It offers a taxable stipend and paid health insurance.

CHARLES BABBAGE INSTITUTE
The Adelle and Erwin Tomash Fellowship in the History of Information Processing
The fellowship is offered to a graduate student whose dissertation will address a topic in the history of computers and information processing. The fellowship may be held at the recipient's home academic institution, at the Babbage Institute, or any other location where there are appropriate research facilities. Priority is given to students who have completed all requirements for the doctoral degree except the research and writing of the dissertation.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants should send biographical data and a research plan including a statement and justification for the research project, discussion of methods, research materials, and evidence of faculty support for the project. In addition, the applicant will need three letters of reference and certified transcripts of graduate school credits. Deadline: January 15.

HAGLEY MUSEUM AND LIBRARY

Scholarship Programs
Provides financial assistance to graduate students enrolled full-time in a Master of Divinity program at an FTE accredited theological institution. Special fellowships for doctoral students, part-time students and students preparing for the urban ministry are offered. The scholarships are designed to support Black North American men and women who hold high promise for effectiveness in the ministry.

ACADEMY FOR EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
National Security Education Program - Graduate International Fellowships
The National Security Education Program, created by Congress in 1991, addresses the need to increase the ability of Americans to communicate and compete globally by knowing the languages and cultures of other countries and to
deepen the awareness of the connection between national security and the issues of sustainable development, environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth, migration, and economic competitiveness. Awards are made for a minimum of one academic semester and a maximum of 24 months.  The basic grant for domestic language or area study is $2000 per semester.  Overseas study is based on program expense.  The maximum award is $10,000 per semester for overseas study for up to two semesters ($20,000).
ELIGIBILITY: Must be a U.S. citizen and enrolled in or applying to a graduate degree program in an accredited U.S. college or university.  All fellowships must include formal study of a modern language other than English and the study of an area and culture.  NSEP fellowship recipients agree to work either with a U.S. government agency with national security responsibilities or in higher education (in that order of priority).  The length of the service obligation is equivalent to the duration of support from NSEP.  Deadline: mid-January

The monthly stipend is $1750 for ten months and a $500 travel reimbursement.

INSTITUTE OF CURRENT WORLD AFFAIRS
The Crane-Rogers Foundation
The purpose of the Institute is to select a young person of outstanding promise and character to study and write about an area or issue of the world outside the U.S. in need of in-depth understanding for a minimum fellowship period of two years. Fellowships are for independent study only, and are not awarded to support work toward academic degrees nor to support collaborative research projects nor to write books.
ELIGIBILITY: Candidates should be under 36 years and have finished with their formal education (B.A./M.A.) There are no citizenship restrictions, but applicants are expected to have a good command of written and spoken English. Deadline: April 1, for a June decision and September 1 for a December decision. John O. Crane Memorial Fellowship This fellowship is offered to graduates who are specifically interested in the study of Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Leo S. Rowe Pan American Fund Offers interest-free loans to citizens or permanent residents of an OAS member country who are students, professionals, or research workers, beginning or continuing their studies in institutions of higher education in the U.S., who, upon completion of their studies, will be in a position to give their respective countries the benefit of their training.
ELIGIBILITY: Must be enrolled or accepted for admission in an institution of higher education in the U.S.; have a meritorious personal and academic record and demonstrate financial need. CHARLES BABBAGE INSTITUTE
The Adelle and Erwin Tomash Fellowship in the History of Information Processing
The fellowship is offered to a graduate student whose dissertation will address a topic in the history of computers and information processing. The fellowship may be held at the recipient's home academic institution, at the Babbage Institute, or any other location where there are appropriate research facilities. Priority is given to students who have completed all requirements for the doctoral degree except the research and writing of the dissertation.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants should send biographical data and a research plan including a statement and justification for the research project, discussion of methods, research materials, and evidence of faculty support for the project. In addition, the applicant will need three letters of reference and certified transcripts of graduate school credits. Deadline: January 15.

This two-year post-gradate fellowship is designed to bring highly qualified college graduates to El Pomar Foundation to support community programs and to train them for positions of leadership in Colorado and the nation. At El Pomar, members of the Fellowship are involved in every aspect of the Foundation's activities, including conducting site visits and supporting the grant making and grant review programs. THE SAMUEL HUNTINGTON FUND
The Samuel Huntington Public Service Award
The Service Award provides an annual stipend of $10,000 for a graduating senior to pursue public service anywhere in the world. The Award allows recipients to engage in a meaningful public service activity for up to one year before proceeding on to graduate school or a career. Requirement: Applicants are asked to shape their own proposals (1,000 words or less) for public service in this country or abroad. It can be undertaken by the student alone or working through established charitable, religious, educational, governmental, or other public service organizations.

LEMELSON FELLOWSHIPS - HAMPSHIRE COLLEGE
An Undergraduate Visiting Fellowship
Lemelson fellowships provide a rare opportunity for motivated students to engage in real-world research, test the limits of their imagination, and develop solutions that benefit society. Fellows will receive full tuition for a semester or 70% tuition for a full academic year. Partial stipends are also available.

The Peace Fellowship allows its recipients to work with an arms control organization in Washington, DC.  Assignments may be in one of the following organizations: ACCESS: an International Affairs Information Service; Arms Control Association; British American Security Information Council; Center for Defense Information; Center for Nonproliferation Studies; Council for a Livable World Education Fund; Federation of American Scientists; Institute for Energy and Environmental Research and

UNITED WAY OF TRI-STATE

The non-profit organization, covering Connecticut, New Jersey and New York, offers a fellowship to work inside major corporations to assist with United Way fund-raising campaigns. The program will accept a maximum of seven fellows for a six-month commitment beginning in July and ending in December. The average number of hours per week is thirty, however hours may flucuate.  Fellows receive a monthly stipend funded by corporate sponsorship.
ELIGIBILITY: Recent graduates or graduate level students can apply; a minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. To be considered for selection the student should have demonstrated interest in the non-profit sector. THE WINSTON FOUNDATION FOR WORLD PEACE
Winston Foundation Fellowship Program
Students with an interest in cooperative security, conflict resolution, and disarmament are encouraged to apply for these fellowships. A stipend of $1200 (untaxed) per month is being offered for a two to four month fellowship. Undergraduate Student Fellowships
The fellowships are offered to undergraduates to enhance the educational experience of qualified science, mathematics, engineering, and technology students. The fellowships provide an intensive introduction to science and technology through participation in research under the guidance of experienced scientists and engineers at one of the cooperating facilities. 1) Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE)
The SURE ten-week summer undergraduate program (conducted  June through August) includes: a two week orientation and research training session at a university; an eight-week research experience with a mentor at the Dept. of Energy (DOE) facility; a scientific writing workshop, and a final symposium and poster session at a DOE national laboratory.

EPILEPSY FOUNDATION OF AMERICA
Behavior Sciences Student Fellowships (and other Research Fellowships)
Three-month fellowships in the amount of $2,000 are awarded to students in the behavioral sciences for work on an epilepsy study project. The fellowship is awarded to a student of vocational rehabilitation counseling. Students propose an epilepsy-related study or training project to be carried out at a U.S. institution of their choice. A preceptor must accept responsibility for supervision of the student and project.

Pre-Doctoral and Dissertation Fellowships for Minorities

The Jacobs Research Funds - Small Grants Program

The Karla Scherer Foundation was established in 1989 to provide scholarships to women wishing to pursue business careers. The National Physical Science Consortium offers a unique six (6) year doctoral fellowship program in astronomy, chemistry, computer science, geology, material science, mathematical sciences, physics, and subdisciplines at a university which is part of the consortium.
ELIGIBILITY: Must be a graduate student in one of the above fields of study. Also, must be a U.S. citizen, accepted for study at one of the member universities of the Consortium, must have research experience at a university and in industry, high academic standing and GRE scores. This federally funded program provides grants to selected institutions for the purpose of preparing eligible undergraduates to pursue a doctoral degree.
