We try to accomodate your request as soon as possible, depending on staff and student schedules. There are two possible ways to schedule appointments with a Counseling Service counselor or psychiatrist.
Generally, an appointment with a counselor is first necessary in order to determine the most appropriate referral. As requested, or when otherwise appropriate, Counseling Service staff will make referrals to off-campus mental health professionals, usually for specialized psychological testing, individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, or private psychiatric medication management. Please call the Counseling Service at 725-3145 to discuss referral to an off-campus clinician. Information about referrals is considered confidential. Please see Confidentiality for any questions.
Important: You must get a referral from the Counseling Service for an off-campus mental health provider, if you have the Bowdoin College Insurance Plan, otherwise your sessions will not be paid for.
Counseling Service works collaboratively with the Health Center staff on a variety of issues, including eating disorders. For any medically-related problems, Counseling staff will refer students to the Health Center in order to provide an integrated approach to solving the issue.
Although our general policy requires scheduling in advance, we also offer a "Walk-in" hour from 4:00-5:00p.m., Monday-Friday, for emergency issues that demand immediate attention. Although no appointment is necessary, please call ahead if possible.
After business hours (5:00pm-8:30am) when the college is in session, a counselor is on-call to respond to any psychologically-related emergency. To reach the counselor, please call Bowdoin Security at 725-3500 and ask to speak with the "on-call" counselor, who will call you back to assist with the emergency.
