Common Good Day

Student
Saturday, September 29, 2007 12:00-4:00 p.m.

Instituted to exemplify President McKeen's vision for a college that served the Common Good, Common Good Day has become a yearly tradition at Bowdoin College. Common Good Day is a day of service that fosters collaboration among members of the Bowdoin community, nonprofit agencies, and municipal organizations in the greater Brunswick area. Students sign up to volunteer for projects around the Brunswick community including gardening, trail maintenance, visiting the elderly, painting, yard work, and spending time with kids from the community. In 2004, over 400 students, faculty, staff, Bowdoin Friends, and alumni participated in this event. Watch for campus mailings and e-mail messages on how you can get involved.

Sponsor a Family

November-December 14, 2007

Sponsor a Family is organized annually by the Salvation Army and is available to any low-income family in need of assistance in purchasing gifts for their children and providing a holiday dinner. The Salvation Army looks to members of the community to sponsor a family and make their holiday season a bit brighter. On average, Bowdoin College adopts 30 or more families, which range in size from 2-9 members! Athletic teams, College houses, academic departments, and college offices are all encouraged to participate in the program. The Salvation Army is a Christian organization, but they welcome all low-income families seeking holiday assistance to join the program, regardless of religion.

Aspirations in ME Day

Friday, February 1, 2008

Although Maine has one of the highest high school graduation rates in the country with an average of 86%, only 69% of those graduates intend to enroll in college – and only about half actually do so the following fall. Aspirations in Maine Day exposes 9th graders from around the state to college and college life with the intent of encouraging them to seek opportunities for higher education. 65 ninth graders from area high schools spend a day on campus with a Bowdoin student mentor and learn about admissions, financial aid, and academic life.
