Wouldn't it be wonderful if your campus job could get you off campus to work with local kids? America Reads and America Counts allow students to do just that!
America Reads and America Counts tutors work at local schools during regular school hours. Students typically spend between 4-8 hours in the schools each week and starting pay is $7.50/hour. In addition to tutoring time, AR and AC tutors are required to attend an orientation at the beginning of the year, participate in monthly meetings, complete program evaluations, and submit weekly journals. Because America Reads and America Counts are federally funded programs, all tutors must be federal work study eligible. If you do not know if you are eligible, contact the Student Employment Office.
America Reads tutors work at Coffin Elementary School in Brunswick and Bowdoinham Community School. Bowdoin students tutor reading and writing in one-on-one or small group settings with students in grades K-5. Tutors work closely with classroom teachers to help students become better readers and writers. Coffin Elementary, which sponsors a majority of the tutors, is an easy walk from campus. For Bowdoinham Community School , carpooling is a possibility and transportation can be secured through college vans.
America Counts tutors work at Brunswick Junior High School, Mt. Ararat Middle School in Topsham, and Durham Elementary and Middle School. Math tutors are needed to help students of all math abilities. Tutors might spend time working one-on-one with students, running small group tutoring sessions, or working alongside teachers in a classroom setting. Brunswick Junior High is within walking distance; carpooling and college transportation are available for the other sites.
Students interested in careers in education or public policy are strongly encouraged to apply, as are those with prior tutoring experience. However, any student who expresses sincere interest will be considered for the program. To apply for either program, please submit an application to Sarah Seames in the CSRC. This is a great chance to make a difference by working in local schools.
