Wordmark with Printed Backgrounds

Proper use of color for the Bowdoin College wordmark provides a recognizable and unified appearance throughout all forms of communication for the institution.

White is the official school color and black is the established secondary color for Bowdoin College. These colors have a long-standing association with the institution and its athletic program including uniforms and the polar bear mascot. For this reason, the approved colors for the wordmark are black and white. No other color may be specified for the wordmark. However, the wordmark may appear on a colored background other than black or white.

The examples shown below illustrate the printing of the wordmark on a printed background, including tinted black, light-colored, and dark-colored backgrounds. To ensure optimal appearance of the wordmark, proofs should be reviewed prior to final production in all cases in which the wordmark prints on a printed background.

  • Tinted black backgrounds from 31%–69% are not acceptable.

  • The wordmark must appear only in black or white.

The positive marks should be used on backgrounds tinted 30% or lighter:

good contrast

Do not use the reversed mark on backgrounds tinted 30% or lighter:

too light for reverse mark

The reverse marks should be used on backgrounds tinted 70% or darker:

reverse good contrast

Do not use the positive marks on backgrounds tinted 70% or darker:

not enough contrast

Certain background colors, even at full strength, do not provide adequate contrast. The only approved background colors for one-color printing are "dark" colors or black.too light

The reverse marks should not be used on very light backgrounds;

The marks must appear only in black or white (not yellow):
too light for reverse

Use the positive marks on light backgrounds: good contrast

Do not use the reverse marks on light backgrounds:two color too light
