Infants start out very dependent and rely on their parents and caregivers to provide them with individual attention. For this reason we will work with parents very closely to find each child's daily rhythm and work with you to regulate your child's patterns.
Arrival and Drop Off
Our day begins with parents tending to paperwork and helping their child settle in for the day. Parents are invited to sit with their children and speak with a caregiver about their child's night and share thoughts for the day. Once a child feels ready to transition to the floor or awaiting lap of a caregiver, parents depart and the day begins.
Depending on each child’s schedule, the infants may be freely exploring the room, being fed, diapered, interacting with an adult, being cuddled or held, rocked for a nap, or exploring the outdoors. These may be individual interactions between an infant and an adult or be a small group of children all partaking in an activity together (sensory activity for example). Infants are fed on an individual schedule while being held for bottles and early lap feedings then moving into a small chair for individual feedings. They then move to low tables for social snack times by late spring or early summer as the group moves to toddlerhood.
Typically infants take a morning nap at some point during the first half of the day although the times vary. Infants are rocked and sung to in a dark quiet setting until very relaxed and then moved into individual cribs for napping. The process of going down for a nap is individualized and continually discussed between educators and parents.
When the weather is warmer than 25 degrees we will bring the infants outside for play. In the summer we have a grassy yard, blankets, and a sandbox for the infants to explore. In the winter we have sleds, a shoveled deck, and have created a small hill for children to crawl on in the YT play yard. One of our understandings of young children's development is to offer them an opportunity to experience their new physical skills inside and out. We know that young children are kinesthetic learners – their exploration of their world is concrete, interactive, and investigatory. We strive to invite them to meet the challenges, opportunities and enticements through interaction with the outdoor world. The infants in our program also enjoy the outdoors through walks in our neighborhood as a way of viewing their world. At BCCC, we will primarily offer them outside play time on our yard, with occasional walks when possible. Much like the morning play, afternoon play consists of infants exploring the materials in the room learning to move their bodies and exploring the natural materials and toys that have been selected. The play space consists of many objects to pull up on, reaach and grasp, and manipulate. Infants are cuddled and sung to as well as roched and read to individually or in small groups. Infants are fed on their own schedules during this time with their primary caregivers providing for them. Infants are held for bottles or lap fed when they start solids. As they grow older, they transition to a small chair and table to create a meal time experience.
Typically infants take an afternoon nap as well. Times for this nap vary child to child. Infants are rocked and sung to in a dark quiet setting until very relaxed and then moved into individual cribs for napping. The process of going down for a nap is individualized and continually discussed between educators and parents.
Departure & Pick Up
As the day comes to a close, Infants are fed and diapered prior to their parents arriving. The day comes to a close inside the infant room as quiet activities are going on such as finger plays, books and songs as well as free play. Caregivers help the children transition back to their parents and information about the day is shared with the families.
