There are a wide variety of opportunities to undertake meaningful summer research at Bowdoin. The Chemistry Department's Summer Research Program gives students a chance to become immersed in a research project where they can synthesize and apply elements of their classroom learning.

Our summer research experiences are funded by College-wide fellowships, the Chemistry Department Coles Fellowships for Research in Chemistry and Biochemistry, and by individual faculty research grants. Students are encouraged to discuss summer research with members of the Chemistry department and links to information about fellowship opportunities are given below. First year students, as well as more advanced students, are encouraged to apply.
Monday, March 3, 2008 at 5:00 pm is the deadline for submitting proposals for summer 2008 or 2008-09 academic year student research fellowships.
Proposals should be sent directly to the Office of the Dean for Academic Affairs, 2nd floor, Hawthorne-Longfellow Hall, before 5:00 pm on March 3. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.
More information about and application guidelines relating to these student fellowships is available at:
http://bowdoin.edu/academics/students/fellowships/stfwps.shtml
For student applicants:
Please carefully review the elements needed for a complete application, as these have been revised since last year, and recognize that your proposal must be written in language that is accessible to the nonspecialist faculty who review the proposals.
For faculty sponsors:
Please note that your letter of recommendation should not include a description of the research project, but should include two elements: (1) An evaluation of the qualifications of the student for the proposed research and (2) A description of how you plan to oversee the proposed research.
Please direct questions to Ron Christensen, who is working with the Faculty Resources Committee to review student fellowship applications.
Finally, if you are interested in research at another institution, we post all of the advertisements we receive outside of the Chemistry Department office. You might also try the list of National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (NSF REU) programs.
