James Stacy Coles Summer Research Fellowships in Chemistry and Biochemistry

The Department of Chemistry proudly announces the availability of fellowships for summer research in the areas of Chemistry and Biochemistry. The fellowships in honor of Spike Coles, 9th President of Bowdoin College, President of Research Corporation, and Physical Chemist, are funded by a generous grant from the Research Corporation. This program intends to provide an exceptional hands-on research opportunity for Bowdoin College students. Students will work closely with a Bowdoin faculty member on a mutually acceptable research project, full time, for eight weeks in the summer. The fellows will receive a $400/week stipend; housing is subsidized for summer research students.

Features

This program features seminars and discussions on topics ranging from applying to graduate schools to careers the chemical industry. Additionally, the program features many social and informal gatherings over the course of the summer to take advantage of the superb Maine summer climate. Among other activities, white water rafting on the Kennebec or Dead Rivers is a favorite (see if you can find Justin here: a quick hint- he is not in the boat!)

Participating Faculty and Research Areas

The Chemistry Department will be holding a research open house February 15th from 3-4 pm in Druckenmiller 20. Each participating member of the department will briefly discuss projects available to summer research fellows or as future Honors or Independant Study projects. This will be a good time to find out what the Department's faculty do in all of their "spare time" and get a feel for what you might do during your summer break. (More information on each Faculty member's research can be found under their name on the Faculty and Staff page, accessed from the menu on the left.)

Dr Rick Broene :Organic and organometallic chemistry

Dr Laura Voss : Heterogeneous atmospheric chemistry and non-linear optical spectroscopy

Dr Danielle Dube : Chemical biology, biochemistry, organic chemistry

Dr Elizabeth Stemmler : Organic Mass Spectrometry

Dr Ron Christensen : Physical chemistry , photobiology, organic photochemistry

Dr Brian Linton : Bioorganic Chemistry

Programs Dates and Schedule:

The fellows are expected to parcticipate in a program of summer research. The College makes housing available beginning just after commencement continuing through the summer. The program will provide each fellow with a $400/week stipend and money for research supplies. The summer program will start June 2nd. Exact scheduling can depend upon your own availability and that of your advisor. The first week will include safety training, and each participant will present their research at one of our weekly lunchtime seminars towars the end of the summer.

Application

The Fellowships are open to any Bowdoin Student with a preference given to current or prospective Chemistry and Biochemistry majors. We encourage all interested to talk with several of the faculty members listed above so that you might have a clear sense of the wide array of the projects available to you.
