Colby,
Bates, and Bowdoin Colleges are closing down their
off-campus study sites in London, Cape Town and Quito. The CBB Quito
Center closed its doors at the end of the fall semester, 2003, and
the London and Cape Town centers will close at the end of the spring
semester 2005.
Since the fall of 1999, Colby, Bates, and Bowdoin
Colleges have sent several hundred junior-year students to the CBB
centers. Faculty members from the three U.S. campuses designed and
taught academic programs at the centers that took into account the
resources and opportunities offered by each site. Courses taught
by local instructors were also available. The centers contained
classrooms, faculty offices, computer facilities, and social areas.
Outside programs involving internships with local institutions,
volunteer service with non-profit organizations, and registation
into local academic institutions encouraged students to integrate
into the local community.
