Paller Neuroscience Research Fellowship

Summer 2008 and Academic Year 2008-2009

Two Paller Neuroscience Research Fellowships are available to support research beginning in the summer of 2008 and continuing through the following academic year, normally culminating in Honors in Neuroscience. Each fellowship includes a summer stipend ($4000. for 10 weeks), summer housing (in Bowdoin on-campus housing), an academic year stipend ($4000.), and funds to cover travel to the Annual Meeting of the Society for Neuroscience in Washington, DC in November, as well as research supplies.

Interested students should submit applications to Julie Santorella, in the Biology Department Office by 4 p.m. on March 6, 2008. It is expected that applicants for the Paller Fellowship this year will have also applied for other summer fellowships. (Those applications are due March 3, 2008.) The standard summer fellowship application, including a transcript, project description written in collaboration with the project mentor, and letter from the mentor, will form a part of the Paller application. In addition, applicants must submit the following two statements, which should be completed independently (1-2 double-spaced pages each):

  1. Briefly describe the future you see yourself pursuing, and how this neuroscience fellowship fits into those plans. Note: the new guidelines for the college-wide fellowships now include a statement similar to the (the relation of the fellowship to the major or later plans - so feel free to use some or all of the same material in this statement. This gives you a little more space (depending on how much you used for the project description) and focuses more on your future plans than on your major, but there could be significant overlap between these statements.

  2. Describe a problem or question that has arisen in the course of your classroom or laboratory work that has puzzled and interested you in such a way as to suggest further study. Include a concise description of the problem and the steps yo would take to address the problem.

We expect to notify applicants for the Paller fellowship in late March or early April, at the same time that other summer research fellowships are announced.
