Baldwin Program Mentor Job Description
Without the support of a well-trained, enthusiastic staff of student mentors, tutors and group leaders, the Baldwin Program could not function. The following brief job description outlines the general responsibilities of an academic mentor. However, because we receive a variety of unanticipated requests for programs, tutoring and other services, and because many programs require a mix of skills and knowledge, we encourage all staff members to receive training in several areas. For example, a mentor might also train for group leadership and tutoring.
Mentors work as peer academic counselors for students interested in academic skills and learning styles assessment and study strategy development. Baldwin Program mentors are available during advertised hours in the Center for Learning and Teaching, Kanbar Hall, Room 102 and other areas of campus, and also make individual appointments with students at times convenient to both parties. Motivation, interest and enthusiasm are essential for academic mentors to be successful.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Learn and practice a variety of learning assessments and study strategies by participating in training and completing weekly readings and logs during work hours.
- Participate and regularly check student website, Blackboard for further training and on-line discussions.
- Complete assessments of students' study strategies, learning styles and academic goals.
- Help students learn new strategies and approaches to improve academic performance.
- Support students attempting to implement study strategy changes.
- Meet regularly with Baldwin Program for Academic Development staff.
- Participate in on-going training throughout the academic year.
- Be available during regularly scheduled hours to meet with students requesting academic mentoring. Some evening hours may be expected.
