The lecture by Richard Wattenmaker entitled "Maurice Prendergast: Themes and Variations" will characterize Prendergast's artistic process and analyze his unique position between European avant-gardes and the new generation of modern artists in America. The lecture is presented in conjunction with the exhibition, "Maurice Prendergast: By the Sea"
on view at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art through this Sunday, October 13, 2013.
Richard Wattenmaker is a contributor to the exhibition catalogue "Maurice Prendergast: By the Sea" and is the former director of the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. He is the author of a monograph on Prendergast and is the editor of the artist's letters.
Reception will follow at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.
