Garth Fagan, the acclaimed Tony Award-winning choreographer of Broadway's The Lion King, will present a lecture demonstration at Bowdoin College at 7:30 p.m. Friday, October 2, 2009, in Pickard Theater, Memorial Hall.
Garth Fagan is one of the great reformers of American dance. He has honed his incomparable, revelatory technique–a blend of ballet, modern, and Afro-Caribbean movements. The dancers in this Rochester, New York-based company are renowned for their individuality, unmannered approach, and virtuosity.
In 2003 Fagan choreographed DANCECOLLAGEFORROMIE inspired by his close friendship with Romare Bearden. Broken into three sections, the dance highlights elements of Bearden’s personality and working method. The second segment, titled “Detail: Down Home Also” is based on a collage of the same name that traveled to Washington as part of a retrospective exhibition at the National Gallery of Art titled The Art of Romare Bearden.
In this lecture/demonstration, Garth Fagan will speak about his influences, and dancers from the company will perform sections from his famous dance compositions.
Fagan's Bowdoin appearance is presented by the Bowdoin College Museum of Art and the Department of Theater and Dance. It is sponsored by the Office of the Dean for Academic Affairs, in conjunction with an exhibition of the works of Romare Bearden at the Museum of Art, as part of the celebration of 40 years of Africana Studies at the College.
