Eve Sussman's "89 Seconds at Alcázar" to Launch New Media Gallery; Artist Talk Scheduled

  • Posted: Oct 25, 2007

In conjunction with the grand reopening of the Bowdoin College Museum of Art the new Media Gallery will be open to show video artist Eve Sussman and the Rufus Corporation’s 2004 film 89 Seconds at Alcázar.

In 89 Seconds at Alcázar, Eve Sussman imaginatively “captures” the moments leading up to and immediately following the dynamic moment of artistic conception in Diego Velázquez’s Las Meninas (The Maids of Honor, 1656); a dazzling and iconic painting that late Italian painter Luca Giordano christened the “theology of painting.” In its unique envisioning of the past through the distinctly modern medium of film, 89 Seconds at Alcázar complements the Museum of Art’s reopening programming by enlivening the dialogue between past and present.

Eve Sussman (born London, 1961) lives in Brooklyn, N.Y. Self-described as a “sculptor who shoots video,” Sussman’s work has progressed from installations using reflective, “film-like” materials (water, glass) to video and photographic installations that capture the simple and often-overlooked details of human interaction. In 2003 she founded The Rufus Corporation, a team of artists and technicians, and continues to collaborate with them on a variety of projects. 89 Seconds at Alcázar has been screened at a variety of renowned international institutions including The Whitney Museum, New York; the Museo Picasso, Barcelona; the Union Gallery, London; and the Reina Sofia, Madrid.

On October 25, 2008, Eve Sussman and the Rufus Corporation will present a lecture on the making of 89 Seconds at Alcázar. The lecture will be held in Searles Hall, Room 315, at 7:30 p.m. on the Bowdoin College campus. The lecture is open to the public free of charge.
