In conjunction with the exhibition Transformations: Traditional and Contemporary Chinese Art in Dialogue, currently on view at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, renowned art critic, curator, scholar, and calligrapher Yingshi Yang will deliver a lecture entitled "Chinese Calligraphy as Contemporary Art" on Thursday, November 15, at 7:00 p.m. in the Zuckert Seminar Room in the Museum of Art.
Transformations: Traditional and Contemporary Chinese Art in Dialogue, on view through February 1, 2008, highlights the rich tradition inherent in Asian art. By juxtaposing ancient scrolls and prints with contemporary Chinese photography, prints, and mixed media works that draw on historic subjects and compositions, this exhibition illuminates the tangible link between past and present. Yingshi Yang's talk will particularly focus on the development of calligraphy from a communication tool to a dynamic art form that, in contemporary culture, pushes the boundaries of both Chinese and Western Art.
Yingshi Yang is a representative of the National Art Museum of China in New York and a doctoral candidate in the Art and Art Education Program of Teachers College, Columbia University. He is currently an Asian Cultural Council/Starr Foundation Fellow and in 2006-2007, he was one of the first two Getty Fellows in residence at the Asia Society Museum in New York. Mr. Yang has been a contributor to many national and international publications and has curated exhibitions for The British Museum and the Asia-Australia Arts Center in Sydney, Australia.
