Six works by Patty Chang, a New York-based performance and media artist, will be featured in the Museum of Art’s new Media Gallery. Chang’s works are characterized by the bold, outrageous and yet subtle use of her own body to test the borders of flesh and the body. At once comedic and disturbing, Chang’s work draws from the strengths of such predecessors as Marina Abramovic, Carolee Schneeman, and Chris Burden, and revitalizes performance and media art by powerful juxtaposing actions, props, and situations. Chang’s work revolves around a sense of individual struggle and failure and also evokes broader discussions about identity, whether sexual or ethnic, bringing together personal document with social commentary. The six works will be shown consecutively over the course of 13 weeks:
Jan. 8-Jan. 27 Melons (At a Loss), 1998
Jan. 29-Feb. 10 Fountain, 1999
