The historic Walker Art Building was renovated and reopened in October of 2007. The architects, Machado and Silvetti Associates, retained the building’s iconic architectural features and provided state-of-the-art climate control and mechanical systems. A new, dramatic glass and bronze entry pavilion houses a glass elevator and “floating” steel staircase, while an addition features an expansive glass curtain wall.
This exhibition, in the new Pavilion, is organized to explain aspects of the design and construction that may not be immediately visible in the completed building. It traces the evolution of the architects’ design process and illustrates the complex technical and construction challenges that were overcome to realize the ambitious design. The collection of images is intended to enhance the experience of the new Museum spaces and foster a greater appreciation of all that has been accomplished.
