This drawing was ascribed to the school of Barocci by Sir Robert Witt and to the circle of Elsheimer by Oberhuber. In fact, it is a copy of a painting (in a Swiss private collection) formerly given to Elsheimer himself and then by Andrews to a follower, Thoman von Hagelstein (1588-1653). See Städelsches Kunstinstitut, Adam Elsheimer [exh. cat.] (Frankfurt am Main, 1966-1967), cat. no. 19, repr. pl. 17a; also K. Andrews, Adam Elsheimer (New York and London, 1977), p. 166, no. A 15. Andrews (letter to the author, 31 March 1982) placed the Bowdoin sheet as a copy, designating the artist as a follower of Elsheimer.

Commentary credited to David P. Becker (or not otherwise captioned) appeared in his catalogue Old Master Drawings at Bowdoin College (Brunswick: Bowdoin College Museum of Art, 1985).
