Twenty-six years ago today the Proteus was crushed and sunk in the ice near Cape Sabine, Lat. 78° 52' Long. 74° 25', the crew retreating in boats to Upernavik.
    Blowing and raining nearly all day. Have figured up number of miles I have sledged since ship came to winter quarters - total 1662; was in the field 161 days.
