Facility Study

New Facility

The proposed 21,350 NASF facility will integrate the teaching, research, and outreach missions of the Arctic program. It will expand the Museum's role as a vital resource for Bowdoin students, faculty, and staff and increase the Museum's capacity to serve scholars, northern residents, writers, film producers, artists, and the general public.

Three formal galleries are projected for the Museum. One will be for permanent exhibits. Another will be for changing exhibits, and a third gallery will be an experimental exhibit space, designed for student-based projects. A video viewing and small group performance space is planned as well. The lobby and reception area will also serve as exhibition space and a place in which to hold special events. Facilities to support the Museum's docent program and outreach initiatives to the community and local schools include a docent meeting room and library and a K-12 project space.

Teaching and research facilities, near the climate controlled collection storage spaces, exhibition galleries, and production spaces, will allow undergraduates, faculty, staff, visiting researchers, and northern residents to work with the collections and one another intensively. These facilities will include archaeology research and teaching laboratories, collection study space, a classroom, staff offices, and meeting space.
