"The Roosevelt fought like a gladiator, turning, twisting, straining with all her force, smashing her full weight against the heavy floes whenever we could get room for a rush, and rearing upon them like a steeplechaser taking a fence." Robert E. Peary 1907

The S.S. Roosevelt was built on Verona Island, Maine, in 1904-5. Designed for Arctic exploration, the Roosevelt carried Robert E. Peary and his crews to the edge of the frozen polar sea in 1905 and 1908.
The Arctic Museum's current exhibit "The Roosevelt: A Model of Strength" is an admiralty model of the Roosevelt that was painstakingly crafted by master builder Richard "Frenchy" DeVynck. DeVynck based the model on his new research about the ship's history.
The Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum gratefully acknowledges the generous support of Anne and Robert Blair, Class of 1960, and Sandy and Robert Koslowsky, in commissioning the Roosevelt model. The model is housed in a state of the art climate-controlled case which is a gift of the Kane Lodge Foundation, Inc. of New York.
