Interview with Lutka Qiatsuk

Lukta Qiatsuk was born on March 14, 1928. He is a renowned sculptor and graphic artist as well as an active hunter. His father, Qiatsuk (1886-1966), was known for his great weather forecasting abilities. Lukta grew up in an outpost camp about 30 kilometers from Kinngait and has spent much of his life out on the land. The interview was conducted in Lukta’s home in Kinngait on July 13, 2000. Putuguk Eli serves as an interpreter. In the interview, Lukta describes how he learned to forecast the weather from his father and how the ocean tides have changed during his lifetime.
