All last night + this morning we had a furious sou-wester directly off the land with blinding drift. Made it seem like the last time we were here. Previous to this the barometer was very high.
The effect of the wind has been to almost completely denude the uplands of snow. This will tend toward a speedy disappearance of the remainder, + the wind particularly if it is the precursor of a windy Spring, will make for the early breaking up of the ice. My toothache has I believe finally disappeared.
This will be the first time I believe in all my Arctic Expeditions that I have been at headquarters through May + June as I seem likely to be now.
Hitherto there has always seemed to be something more to be done in the field. Now my work is done. I have only to get it in shape.
