Transfer Students

The Office of Admissions will mail Fall 2008 transfer applicant decisions in early May.

  • Does Bowdoin admit transfer students?
    • Yes, a limited number of transfers are admitted each year to sophomore or junior standing.
  • What are the application deadlines?
    • By March 1 for admission in the fall (notification in early May)
    • Please note: we are not offering midyear transfer admission.
  • What must transfer applicants provide?
    • The Common Application and Bowdoin Supplement (without the Bowdoin Supplemental essay; the Common Application essay will suffice.)
    • The Transfer Student Supplement (downloadable or available from the Admissions Office)
    • Transcripts of college and secondary school records
    • A statement from a college dean or advisor
    • At least two recommendations from current or recent professors
    • A $60 application fee.
  • Will my credits transfer to Bowdoin?
    • The Office of Student Records will provide transfer candidates with an estimate regarding credit transfer at the time of admission. An official evaluation will follow after updated transcripts have arrived at Student Records and been appraised by the appropriate departments.
  • Does Bowdoin have residency requirements?
    • Two years of residence are required for a Bowdoin degree. Students who have completed more than four semesters of college work are welcome to apply for admission with this understanding.
  • Does Bowdoin offer financial aid to transfer students?
    • Aid funds for transfer students may be limited by the College's other commitments.
    • Applicants for financial aid must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the College Scholarship Service Profile by February 15 (March 1 for U.S. fall transfer students). Both forms are usually available at local high schools.
